Day 47 In Guffey, Colorado

The only place open in this town of 25 people year round was Rita’s Place. So lucky for me when I walk into this place I thought I was back on Long Island in a family café. Rita was great and the food was terrific. I started feeling better almost immediately. Rita directed Steve and me to Billy Soux Garage and Bunk House. Billy is one of those people, bigger than life. He greeted us like we were long lost friends. We settled into the bunkhouse, over one hundred years old, for the night. There was no running water and no electricity. He did have gas lamps…perfect.
The town is hard to envision. It consists mostly of old log cabins some in good repair but most pretty weathered. There were a lot of old cars, wagons and things all over the place that we couldn’t recognize and didn’t know what they were. Guffey Colorado is a small friendly mountain town located less than one mile off of CO HWY 9 at mile marker 21. Eleven mile reservoir is just up the road, Cripple Creek is just over the hill, and the Royal Gorge is just down the hill, we are centrally located and an easy drive to many of Colorado’s best attractions. Stop by and visit our town of Guffey.
By the way, Guffey is semi-famous for electing animals Mayor of Guffey, although such an office does not officially exist. According to local folklore, the two main political parties in Guffey are called the "Democats" and the "Repuplicans". The last known Mayor of Guffey is a cat named Monster (elected in 1998).
We visited the town hall that had a mix of items dating from the 1860’s into the 1960’s.
All in all, the day ended on a high note. Until tomorrow.
We are at 8,700 feet above sea level…not good for a boy from Long Island. For Steve, a boy from Lake Tahoe, it was just another high place.
